The cost of dental care in The Netherlands

Dental care is a private business in The Netherlands, there are no government run practices. However, the government sets the prices that practices are allowed to charge to maintain consumer safety and confidence.

The NZa (The Nederlands Zorgautoriteit) keep a strict eye on dental care practice in The Netherlands. For instance they hold regular check-up weeks (controleweken) in conjunction with the Health inspectorate, IGZ (Inspectie voor de Gezondheidszorg) to make sure dental practices are not charging additional fees unduly, and are abiding by hygiene rules.

So what can you expect to pay for your dental cover? Every year the NZa release the maximum charges that dentists can charge patients for different treatments. Below you will find an overview of the costs for the most common dental procedures as an indication of the prices you can expect.

Dental care insurance

All dental care for the Under 18´s is covered in your basic health insurance policy, but for adults it´s a different story. To make sure your regular check-ups, cosmetic dentistry, or ad hoc procedures are covered, you will need a supplementary health insurance package (aanvullende pakket). And there are times when you may need additional attention; during pregnancy for example, you may need extra dental hygienist appointments as you’re more prone to inflamed gums. Adding a dental care element to your health insurance to cover these periods is highly recommended.

Regular dental care costs

General check-up costs are not high, €20,44 for a ´controle´ appointment. However if you add x-rays this will add €30.12. And for emergency dental care, the dentist can add out of hours charges on top. So, if you’re concerned you may need considerable intervention in the year ahead that’s when you want to make sure that your insurance coverage is sufficient.

Costs for supplementary insurance to cover dental care start from around €50 and can go up to  €1200 or more (including your basic coverage). Zorgwijzer is a comparison site that also has info in English to help you find a supplementary option to suit your budget.
